Glass for various uses

Mario Moretti

Description

In the field of materials for thermal and acoustic isolation, a particular type of glass called multi-cellular glass or foamed glass is used. It has a structure of very small pores, separated by a thin and compact glass skeleton which makes the object light, incombustible and resistant to micro-organisms.
It is obtained via two types of treatments:
- sintering of the glass reduced to powder and mixed with substances like silicone carbide or calcium carbonate which, due to decomposition at the thermal treatment temperature, develop a notable quantity of gas.
- induction into the air of a fluid glass subjected to a pressure that prevents the removal of bubbles by the discharge of gas.

In the group of internal and external coverings, we note glass mosaic. This is an object found on the market in the form of small 20x20 millimetre tessere, available in a very wide range of colours.
