Transfer Printing

Description

This is a process invented after the middle of the 18th century. It was then adopted in Great Britain at the beginning of the 19th century and the Russian glassworks in about 1840.

The technique involves a decoration engraved on a copper slab, then covered with a metal oxide based ink, which then fills in the engraving cavities. From the slab, the decoration is transferred onto paper and while still damp, onto the wall of the glass. The decoration is then permanently attached to the glass by muffle furnace annealing.
