Bio-glass

Mario Moretti

Description

This is glass whose chemical composition is very similar to that of bone tissue.
This characteristic has led to its use in orthopaedics as an implant material; the biocompatibility of this glass is such that a direct anchoring with the bone tissue is rendered possible, thereby improving interactions which are generated between tissues and the implant material.
The glass base is composed of silica (SiO2), calcium oxide (CaO), sodium oxide (Na2O) and phosphoric anhydride (P2O5) to which other components can be added to obtain greater chemical stability.
