Applied Blobs

Applied blob decoration dates back to the early days of glassmaking. Incandescent glass blobs are pulled out of a crucible and applied to the object with a short and thin pontil or 'speo'.

The blob can be in relief or incorporated into the wall by marvering the object. The blobs can be of various dimensions and can form big, pointed knobs like in some types from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance produced North of the Alps: Krautstrunk, Nuppenbecher.

Decorative motifs can also be imprinted on the blobs: they look like raspberries in the German or Dutch Roemers from the 17th century and are 'strawberries' in Venetian glasswork from the 16th century.
